He seems genuinely excited to see—and to write about—even the most banal occurrences. Thus, while his prose and his structure may not be the most scintillating, to try to make sense of a man who would spend six years walking and noting all things British and Irish is a fascinating exercise.  His account of this experience, A Year among the Persians (1893), is a highly regarded classic of travel literature.  His colonialist bent often seems absurdly arrogant to contemporary readers. Invariably, the Persians come across as bumbling and foolish; they serve as comic impediments to his “noble quest” for understanding and documenting the structure of the Persian language.

From 1811 to 1812, he traveled, fearlessly and tirelessly.  His logs and records are meticulous, if vast.  When he found that this material had become exhausted—when he was aged 82 years—he killed himself.  He spends a disproportionate amount of energy describing the Dutch farmers in extraordinary detail.  Fortunately for us, his scientific inquisitiveness was matched by a gift for writing: his story is both dramatic and written with a literary flair.  It is exactly this enthusiastic wonder running through Burchell’s text that makes it interesting.
