When he arrived in 1612, he found that a local physician, Peter Baron, had been forcefully expounding Arminianism, the recently emerged “heresy” from the Dutch Reformed Church that argued that salvation and damnation were not simply dependent on God’s arbitrary will, but involved human choice. 14 Puritans were especially vulnerable to this critique because they tended to favor an extreme form of predestination called supralapsarianism. Supralapsarianism argued that God decreed the eternal damnation of sinners before he decreed Adam’s Fall that provided the opportunity for sin—in effect, God flunked the damned even before he wrote their test.
