The Spaniards had committed a threefold crime: (1) they had invaded a foreign land and established a ‘tyranny’ (the very term Spaniards used to refer to the Moslem conquest of Spain), and therefore their possession is illegitimate; (2) they had established a servitude, as ‘slavery’, and this is ‘unjust’; (3) through these violations of a people’s land and human freedom they had betrayed Spain’s missionary vocation as a Christian country. This last argument leads to the second level of discussion, developed in Del Unico Modo de Atraer a Todos los Pueblos a la Verdadera Religion (1537): (1) the ‘Indians’ are human beings and, as such, they have all the same inalienable rights; (2) besides, they are rational beings and consequently they can be led to faith by the use of reason; thus, (3) evangelisation cannot be advanced by domination but only through conviction: and finally, (4) ‘the teacher has to present himself as an example of what he says, so that he teaches more through his works than through his own words’.

Both alternatives, however, in the framework of the Cold War and the reaction of national armies tied to privileged economic interests at home and abroad, had no chance of success. The response was repression. This resulted in the late seventies and eighties in violent military regimes and the violation of all human rights in most southern countries (Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Argentina, Bolivia) or imposed ‘elected’ governments (most of Central America). This is the background against which we can project the developments in the Catholic and Protestant churches after the Second World War.
