The other pillar in the branding of Idols was the presenter team, Holm and Villum Jensen, 36 Adapting Idols who were chosen because of their appeal to TV3’s young target audience. The pair was new to television and, as such, inexperienced television presenters. Their experience within other areas such as comedy, acting and stand-up was utilized to create a younger and, as the analysis shows, more irreverent appeal to suit TV3. In fact, this chapter argues that in the case of Australian Idol and the Danish Idols cultural differences play a minor role and the adaptations could have quite easily changed country, although they could not have changed broadcaster. In this respect, the chapter finds inspiration in the so-called technology transfer theory (Todd 1995) and regards formats as any other technology that is transferred from one country to another and in turn has to adapt to and is influenced by the systemic conditions existing in a particular country.
